Singer songwriter Pete Lawrie comes from a line of professional musicians. Grandad played oboe on Strawberry Fields Forever and Star Wars. Ma and Pa Lawrie played footsie in the woodwind section of the Liverpool Philharmonic. Young Pete has made it a three generation thing by getting himself signed to a subsidiary of Island Records, the clever lad. Of course, looking like a cross between Joseph Fiennes and Robbie Williams probably didn’t do him any harm on that front, but with a voice to die for (think Paolo Ntini’s rustic cousin) and the songwriting ability of The Waterboy’s Mike Scott, he always had a chance.
Together with his school mates Elliot Wall (drums) and Mike Shankleman (bass), Pete’s just released his new album, The Collection, and a marvelous thing it is too — spirited and summery, singalong pop that’ll make you want to skip, swig and skinnydip with a flame-haired lovely from Llandudno.
