Watch Fran Barker, the lead singer of Seerauber Jenny, for more than about ten seconds and you’ll realise that she writes songs not because it makes her look good in front of boys, or because they might make her rich, but because she has to. Songwriting gives her the courage to say those things that are too scary to be spoken. Her music may be indie pop, but throwaway it most certainly ain’t.
A West Country lass living in Brighton, Fran’s obvious muse is PJ Harvey. But together with the production magic of Manchester-based collaborator Neil Claxton (formerly of big beat stars, Mint Royale), Seerauber Jenny’s music takes on an infectious and electrified New Ordileness. With their heady concoction of passionate sensitivity and pulsating pop energy, it’s no wonder the duo is attracting attention in all the right places, winning in the Best Of Myspace competition and being chosen to represent BBC 6 Music at last year’s In The City. Expect to hear a lot more from them.
