Blimey. As gig reviews go, you could hardly get one more glowing than The Guardian’s effort for To Kill A King, London’s latest purveyors of stirring, Arcade Fire-ish folk rock to wow those in the know. In his review, The Grauniad’s Paul Lester (he of the appaling tendency towards the royal ‘we’) wrote that the band’s single, Cool Skin, is:
‘the most thrillingly conventional piece of music we’ve heard all year and made us write the phrase “powerfully plangent” on our phone while pogoing to its pithy piquancy in the dark….Enough to make us believe in indie guitar rock again.’
Enough said? Almost. Signed to Ben Mumford’s label, Communion, To Kill A King consists of Ralph Pelleymounter (vocals, acoustic guitar), Josh Platman (bass), Jon Willoughby (drums), Ian Dudfield (electric guitar) and Ben Jackson (keyboards). All of us at the Crypt Sessions are delighted they came and played for us. We’re sure you will be too. And yes, that’s a collective ‘we’. There’s nowt regal about us (unlike the quality of the sessions themselves, of course).
